Why Category Certificates Matter in NEET Counselling
A category certificate that's expired, wrongly formatted, or issued from the wrong authority can cost a candidate their seat - even after a successful allotment. Here's what to check.
With counselling running across multiple rounds this year, candidates in every round - including the later rounds many are realistically targeting - lose seats every counselling cycle over certificate problems, not merit problems. A valid rank and a valid certificate are two separate requirements, and both have to hold up at document verification.
### Validity dates are strict, not approximate
OBC (non-creamy layer), income, and several other category certificates carry validity periods, often tied to a specific financial year. A certificate that was valid when issued can lapse by the time document verification happens later in the counselling cycle. Check the validity date against the verification date, not the counselling start date.
### Issuing authority has to match the requirement
Counselling authorities specify which office is authorized to issue a given certificate - and it varies by state and by certificate type. A certificate issued by an authority not on the accepted list can be rejected even if every other detail is correct.
### Format and specific wording matter
Some certificates require exact prescribed formats and specific wording (particular phrases the counselling authority looks for). A certificate that's substantively correct but uses non-standard wording or an outdated format template can still be flagged.
### Category and PwD certificates often need separate renewal timelines
For candidates claiming both a reservation category and a PwD certification, each has its own validity and reissue rules. Assuming one covers the other is a common and costly error.
