What US Contractors Should Look For in a Construction Lead Partner
Not every construction lead source is built the same. What US contractors should actually check before paying for leads.

Every construction contractor in the US has been pitched "leads" at some point - a list, a subscription, a per-lead fee. Some of it works. A lot of it does not. The difference rarely comes down to price. It comes down to what is actually being sold.
### The question most contractors forget to ask
Before agreeing to pay for leads, the question that matters most is simple: what happens to a homeowner or property manager's enquiry before it reaches me?
If the honest answer is "it gets forwarded to you and four other contractors at the same time," that is not a lead partner - that is a bidding war you did not agree to enter. If the answer is "it gets checked for project type, timeline, and budget fit before it reaches you," that is a different, far more valuable thing.
### What a real construction lead partner should be doing
- Checking project intent - is this a real project with a timeline, not a homeowner gathering quotes for a project two years out?
- Checking fit - does the project match the contractor's actual trade and service area?
- Checking exclusivity terms - is the lead sold to one contractor or shopped to several at once?
- Being upfront about the model - pay-per-lead, pay-per-result, or shared/exclusive - a serious partner tells you plainly, before you commit.
### Why "more leads" is the wrong goal
A contractor's crew and estimating time are limited. A flood of unqualified leads does not grow a business - it burns estimating hours on homeowners who were never going to sign a contract, while real, ready-to-build projects get missed in the noise.
The right question is not "how many leads can you send me," but "how many of the leads you send me turn into signed jobs."
### How V&T approaches it
V&T's GlobalReach unit works with US contractors on a performance basis - we only succeed when the leads we generate actually convert into business for our partners, which keeps our incentive aligned with the contractor's, not against it.
### The bottom line
Before signing up with any lead source, ask what happens to an enquiry before it reaches you. If nobody can answer that clearly, that is the answer.
